The Chinese energy company STATE GRID presents itself at the EXPO 2010 with a pavilion, which through its exterior façade as well as through the multimedial architectural Magic Box installation inside picks up on the topic of the grid as a symbol for the company’s complexity and connective capabilities.
Between the two flanks of the building and above the main entrance, the Magic Box floats freely. Inside, it provides the space for a multimedia installation – also produced by Tamschick Media+Space and m box. Seen from the outside, it forms the central element of the multimedia façade design: MAGIC GRID. Tiny moving reflective plates cover the cube’s LED surfaces. By night and with the natural play of wind and light they serve to amplify the dynamic filmic action and add an organic dimension with a life of its own.
The ‘energy grid’ theme is once again picked up on in the form of a fine LED grid combined with individual larger portions of the façade that are also lit with LEDs, and this is continued across the surface of the entire building. The multimedia elements of the central cube are impulse generators for the dynamic light streams – generated by the interactive software V4 – and these light streams that envelop the entire building with an ‘energy heartbeat’ give the façade an unusual depth and three-dimensionality.
A Tamschik Media+Space GmbH production in cooperation with m box bewegtbild GmbH and under the overall conceptual direction of Atelier Brückner.
